OpeninApp link not working? How to fix or replace it

A link that used to open the YouTube app and now opens nothing, or opens a browser, or shows an error, almost always has one of four causes. This post is the checklist I use, in the order that finds the problem fastest, and then the quickest way to get a working link back in your bio.

It is written for OpeninApp links because that is what people search for, but every step applies to any app-opening link, including ours.

Find the cause in four checks

Open the destination directly. Paste the actual YouTube, Instagram or Spotify address into a browser. If it is private, deleted or wrong, no link tool can open it — fix the destination first.

Tap the short link on your own phone from inside the Instagram app, not from a notes app or a desktop browser. App-opening links only do their job on a phone, tapped from the app you shared them in.

Check the app is installed. Without the YouTube or Spotify app on the phone, every link tool falls back to the browser. That is a fallback working, not a link failing.

Open the short link in a normal phone browser. If it shows an error page, a blank page or never forwards, the link itself is the problem — it may have been deleted, expired, or the service may be having trouble. This is the case where you want a replacement.

Why the in-app browser matters

Instagram, TikTok and Facebook open links in their own built-in browser rather than handing them to your phone. That browser is logged out of everything, and a plain youtube.com address carries no instruction to launch the app. An app-opening link adds that instruction — which is why it works from inside Instagram but looks like nothing special on a desktop.

It also means the same link can behave differently in different apps. Test from the place you actually shared it.
